"Promoting ecologically resilient cultures through
the free sharing of open-pollinated seed."

Between November 2006 and March of 2007, Andrew Still and Sarah Kleeger, farmers from Oregon in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, are travelling throughout Europe to freely share seed of some of the finest food crops their country has to offer. They are also gathering seed to share freely when they return home.

This non-profit effort is supported by a broad array of individuals and grassroots organizations in and around Andrew and Sarah's home county, and elsewhere.

Cross-cultural synergies

Our bioregion, with a climate very similar to that of many parts of nothern Europe, is home to some of the country's foremost independent food plant breeders who have spent decades developing robust, stable, productive open-pollinated food crops in organic field conditions. We will be carrying seed from these breeders as well as from our network of local seed savers.

Historically, there exists almost no contact between independent plant breeders and seed savers in the U.S. and Europe. It is our hope that this journey will help nurture relationships of great benefit to these communities, and those they feed, on both sides of the Atlantic. We hope to share information, as well as seed and, where possible, to document the insights of growers and breeders whose work touches upon the roots of ecologically resilient cultures.

Our Team

Andrew, 25, and Sarah, 26, are a husband and wife team who currently manage the Laurel Valley Educational Farm in Eugene, Oregon. They have apprenticed with several established organic farms in the Pacific Northwest; have been growing and saving seed for some years; are actively committed to the stewardship of local food crops. See Andrew's and Sarah's bios.

Nick Routledge is The Seed Ambassadors Project home-base organizer in Oregon. Nick has extensive experience travelling with seed and arranging seedswaps and giveaways, and has written broadly around the topic of seed and seed sharing. Read more in Nick's bio.

As well as enjoying the support of local gardeners and farmers, we also enjoy very friendly relationships with established plant breeders who are supporting us both with seed to carry and share, and with counsel about the potential objectives of our effort.

Please participate!

The Seed Ambassadors Project is a grassroots, non-profit effort. Andrew and Sarah will be travelling in landscapes and cultures they are unfamiliar with. It is our hope that those of you who perceive the value of their work will step forward to support their travels, with advice, seed and whatever form of assistance you are able to gift.

Please explore our website to garner a sense of how you may be able to participate in this gentle effort.

"It is best to think of this as a revolution, not of guns, but of consciousness, which will be won by seizing the key myths, archetypes, eschatologies, and ecstasies so that life won't seem worth living unless one is on the transforming energy's side." - Gary Snyder
